Trying to print on cardstock can make a perfectly decent printer act stubborn. Sheets stop halfway in. Ink smears near the edges. Colors come out flat. And sometimes the printer simply looks at the paper like it has been personally offended.

Still, most cardstock printing problems come from a short list of issues. The paper path is too curved. The media setting is wrong. Too many sheets are loaded. The stock is thicker than the printer can handle. Or the printer is technically printing, but not with the right timing, pressure, or drying behavior for thick paper.

If you want to print on cardstock without jams, smudges, or faded colors, the fix is usually not fancy. It is setup.

Why Cardstock Causes Problems in the First Place

Cardstock is thicker and stiffer than plain office paper. That means it bends less easily as it moves through rollers and tight turns inside a printer. Many printer makers handle this by routing thicker paper through a manual feed slot, rear tray, or straight-through path instead of the standard paper cassette.

Do a Small Test Before a Full Run

I know. Nobody likes test prints when there are fifty invitations waiting.

But cardstock printing is exactly where test prints pay off. Paper behavior changes with finish, thickness, humidity, ink coverage, and the printer model. A short test tells you whether the stock feeds cleanly, whether the colors look right, and whether the sheet exits flat and dry.
